Jack Cooper (Ultimate Painting) & Cut Worms tell us their Top 10s of 2017
We’ve been running end-of-year lists from lots of different artists, such as Kevin Morby and Parquet Courts’ A. Savage, and more. We’ve got two more lists here, the first being from Ultimate Painting’s Jack Cooper who released his excellent first solo album, Sandgrown, this year and toured North America with Savage. Jack says:
I ended last year stranded in New York after recording an album with Andrew Savage from Parquet Courts. My passport and wallet were either stolen or lost in the snow and I spent a few days waiting for an emergency passport, pining for home and England. I made myself a playlist that reminded me of home and began compiling a bunch of half finished songs of mine that would become my solo album ‘Sandgrown’. A few months later, after finishing the album, I bought a compilation called ‘English Weather’ assembled by Pete and Bob from Saint Etienne and I was weirded out to find many of the artists that I’d included on my playlist were on the record, specifically JLT by T2 and Til The Christ Comes Back by Bill Fay sat right next to each other. The compilation sat perfectly with what I wanted to do with my record… I guess something was in the air. Touring as much as I have over the last few years, Brexit and my twenties disappearing into the distance have made me feel increasingly English.
Jack’s list includes that English Weather compilation, as well as records by Richard Dawson, Robert Sotelo, Dead Rider, and more. Jack adds, “I’d like to pick out Rick Tomlinson‘s album, Phases Of Daylight, as something that particularly resonated with me this year. I’ve loved most of Rick’s stuff and admire his approach and outlook. He’s a very talented chap.” Stream that album, Jack’s solo album, and check out his list below. Secondly, we’ve got Max Clarke of Cut Worms who we picked as one of the best new(ish) rock artists of 2016 and will release his debut album in 2018 via Jagjaguwar. Max opted to do something different for his list: his “Top 10 best ‘top 10 fail videos’ on YouTube,” and who in 2017 couldn’t use a laugh? Marriage proposals, Wheel of Fortune, news reporters, water slides and more all go horribly wrong in videos on his list. Watch, and read Max’s commentary for each one, below.
Cut Worms, who played constantly in NYC (and elsewhere) in 2017, will open for Allah Las at Brooklyn Steel on January 20 with Sam Evian on the bill as well (tickets). He’ll also be on tour in the UK in 2018, all dates are listed along with a stream of this year’s Alien Sunset demos EP, below.

This, in my opinion, adds to how funny it can really be when someone fails especially because they think that they are better at doing something then you, and then what happens? They fail.
