Jaga Jazzist | What We Must (guest post)

“JAGA JAZZIST!! NO ONE’S SAID JAGA JAZZIST!!
What, are you guys NUTS?!?! Has NO ONE heard “What We Must” yet?? JEEZ people!!”

After drowned_in_milk left the above comment in my Favorite Albums post, I asked him if he would submit a post with more info, so here it is…

Jaga Jazzist Norwegian 10-piece Jaga Jazzist‘s latest outing/epic masterpiece, “What We Must“, has apparently slipped under the radar to become one of the most underrated releases of the year thus far. Build a foundation somewhere in the Tortoise side of the post-rock spectrum (though Jaga aren’t really post-rock at all) season it with some Stereolab, throw in some diced Sun Ra, and you’ll get something remotely similar to Jaga’s latest. Other comparisons have been drawn to Squarepusher, Talk Talk, Don Cherry, and, perhaps most accurately, “Charles Mingus with Aphex Twin up his ass.” They also quote My Bloody Valentine, Miles Davis, Sonic Youth, Björk, and Radiohead as influences. Omar Rodruigez-Lopez calls them his new favorite band, and decided to invite them to play the Mars Volta-curated ATP, and also did a four-page XLR8R spread with them. And for all you skeptics, you can get 2-minute samples of each song from Ninja Tune.
