Jane’s Addiction played their third NYC-area show with Dinosaur Jr. at Capitol Theater on Sunday (7/17). The show came after a stop at Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk with growing Philly shoegaze revivalists Nothingand a show at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in NJ.

The Coney Island performance was one of the first shows at the newly-opened Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk. Unfortunately I missed most of Dinosaur Jr while waiting in line to get in. By that same token, the show was one of the speediest I’d encountered: the show was scheduled to begin at 8 PM according to the ticket, and by 8:45, Dinosaur Jr (the second act of the night) were largely finished with their nine-song set. In any case, Dinosaur Jr sounded warm and lively even from outside the theater, and closed their show with a cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.” Check out a gallery of photos from their show at The Cap below.

Inside the theater, I had just enough time to scope out the venue between bands. Never in my life have I not had to wait in line for the bathroom at a large concert, but at the Ford Amphitheater not only was there no line, there was an abundance of clean open stalls. Concessions weren’t surprising in any way, with a bottle of water priced at $5, but what was surprising was that you were not allowed to keep that cap of said bottle of water. The sales people said that it was “policy” for them to take the caps back as some kind of contraband, though I’m unsure they had any better an idea as to why this was necessary than I did [Safety hazard – Ed].

Overall, the amphitheater was pretty pristine, which is to be expected since it’s new. It had all the features and technical abilities of major stages — for example, from where I was, it was better to watch the show on the giant screens than the stage itself.

It was a bit nicer than many big shows I’ve been to, making me feel like a middle aged mom who just wants to be able to stand and dance in place for some songs and sit comfortably for others, pay $13 for a beer, and get home before midnight. That whole experience was likely bolstered by the fact that I was seeing Jane’s Addiction.

I originally attended this show with the intention of seeing Nothing and Dinosaur Jr, with no real feelings toward Jane’s Addiction. But by the end of the show, I wouldn’t hesitate much to call myself a fan. Jane’s Addiction really likes to put on a show, even if they rely more on women dancing in bikinis on stage to do so. Perry Farrell still has a lot of kick in him, and with his bottle of wine, genuinely seemed to be having fun on stage. He wore a white button down with a suit vest through the entire show, while guitarist Dave Navarro took his shirt off after one song. Also – girls with hooks through the skin of their backs swung above the stage [very Coney Island – ed].

The show was part of a tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of Ritual de lo Habitual, the second album from Jane’s Addiction, which they are playing in full each night. I was a little worried that I wouldn’t hear the one Jane’s Addiction song (not on Ritual) that I truly loved, “Jane Says.” But at the end of the show, they brought out the steel drums and my wish was fulfilled.

Following this tour, Jane’s Addiction will be playing at Lollapalooza. Jane’s Addiction pics fro The Cap are in the Gallery Above and full setlists for both nights as well as the remaining tour dates are listed below.
