Yo La Tengo celebrated the second night of Hanukkah on Monday night at Bowery Ballroom and brought with them a variety of musical gifts, including the great Janet Weiss who joined them, “where she belongs” (as Ira Kaplan put it), on drums and percussion for their whole main set. It was her first time behind the kit since her car accident earlier this year, and she tweeted, “infinite thanks to @TheRealYLT for inviting me to do what I love most in the world. I’m gonna feel it tomorrow but god damn that was FUN. I could double drum with Georgia all day long. Incredible way to close out one helluva crazy year!”

Janet’s friend Fred Armisen, who drummed with YLT on Hanukkah Night 1, opened night two with a standup set that also had him playing The Blue Jean Committee‘s “Catalina Breeze.” Lucinda Williams, who had played with Jesse Malin at Bowery last week, was the night’s special guest opener, and she joined YLT in the middle of their set for a few covers, including Dylan’s “Wallflower,” the Velvet Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes,” and T-Rex’s “Get it On” with Fred Armisen coming out to play keyboards.

Fred stuck around for the rest of Yo La Tengo’s set, on keyboards and drums, which included “Artificial Heart,” “Sugarcube” and “Mushroom Cloud.” The encore was a tribute to Flamin’ Groovies’ Roy Loney, who died earlier this month, with Miriam Linna and Bruce Bennett of The A-Bones (who had backed Roy Loney on tour) and Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye with covers of four Groovies songs including “Teenage Head” and “Slow Death.”

Laraine Newman made the night’s mix CD (pic below), CJ The DJ was the post-show DJ, and all proceeds went to Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide. You can check out the setlist, via Jesse Jarnow’s Frank & Earthy blog, and instagram pics and video from Hanukkah Night 2, below. You can check out pics, setlist and video from Night 1 (featuring Fred, Jon, Glazer, Greg Hetson and more) here.

The remaining six Hanukkah shows at Bowery Ballroom are now all sold out, but sometimes more tickets are put back on sale, so it’s worth checking back.
