Jarvis Cocker announces JARV IS... album 'Beyond the Pale,' shares "House Music All Night Long"

Jarvis Cocker has spent the last couple years touring with his new band JARV IS… — not only road-testing new songs but also recording the performances. They then took those live recordings into the studio, which has become new album Beyond the Pale, which will be out May 1 via Rough Trade. Jarvis notes “this is not a ‘live’ album, it is an ALIVE ALBUM.” It’s also Jarvis’ first “pop” record since 2009’s Further Complications. It includes last year’s great single “Must I Evolve?,” and they’ve just shared new single is “House Music All Night Long” that is both about house music and being a homebody. Says Jarvis:

We first performed this at the All Points East festival in Victoria Park in May 2019. The crowd reaction was so positive that I was inspired to do my first-ever bit of crowd-surfing (which I enjoyed so much that I have repeated it a couple of times since). We played the song throughout the summer & eventually recorded it after our final performance of the year at the End of the Road festival on September 4th.

It’s a straightforward love song about someone stuck alone in the house whilst the object of their affections is out dancing to House music at a rave.

“Everybody in the Place” is the title of a Jeremy Deller 2019 documentary on Rave Culture.

Jarvis conceived the video as well, which he says is a nod to the low budget but inventive videos he used to direct for Warp artists like Aphex Twin and LFO in the ’90s. Watch below.

Jarvis and his band — Serafina Steer (harp, keyboards, vocals), Emma Smith (violin, guitar, vocals), Andrew McKinney (bass, vocals), Jarvis’ former Relaxed Muscle bandmate Jason Buckle (synthesiser & electronic treatments) and Adam Betts (drums, percussion, vocals) — announced NYC record release shows on May 14 at Elsewhere with early and late shows. Tickets for both go on sale Friday, March 6 at 10 AM. Look for more North American dates TBA but they’ve just announced new UK dates, too. All are listed below.
