Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires honored Gregg Allman at the Beacon (pics, videos, setlist)

Last week, Jason Isbell released his excellent new album The Nashville Sound, the followup to two solo albums and his first with backing band The 400 Unit since 2011’s Here We Rest. The day after its release, Isbell began a tour, which hit NYC’s Beacon Theatre last night (6/22). Last night’s show was opened by Isbell’s wife and 400 Unit member Amanda Shires, and both Shires and Isbell used the opportunity to pay tribute to Gregg Allman.

Allman sadly passed away earlier this year, and the Beacon was The Allman Brothers Band’s home in NYC before they called it quits in 2014. As JamBase points out, Shires brought out Isbell during her opening set for the Allmans’ “Midnight Rider,” and Isbell ended his encore with a cover of “Whipping Post.” Videos of both of those songs are below.

Isbell’s set included a nice chunk of the new album, favorites off those last two beloved solo albums, a few 400 Unit oldies, and a couple songs from his days in Drive-By Truckers. His full setlist is below and pictures of the show are in the gallery above.

Isbell’s Beacon run continues tonight (6/23) and Saturday (6/24). These two shows will be opened by The Mountain Goats, who are currently supporting the release of their excellent new album Goths. You can still snag tickets.
