Jen Cloher played Rough Trade with Courtney Barnett in her band (pics, videos, setlist)

Melbourne’s Jen Cloher toured behind her self-titled 2017 album last year while opening Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile’s collaborative shows. For those shows, she took the stage alone with just a guitar, but now she’s returned to the US for more tour dates, this time with a full band – which happens to include Courtney, who is also her longtime collaborator and partner. That tour stopped in Brooklyn for a sold-out show at Rough Trade on Tuesday (1/30), with fellow Australian Mia Dyson opening. With a band behind her, Jen’s songs gained grit and depth from when I’d last seen her perform them solo, and she seemed to relish the opportunity to rock out as a band leader. Courtney’s wild, unhinged guitar playing provided an excellent backdrop, and witnessing she and Jen shred together was a treat – especially when they were also joined by Mia Dyson for “Fear Is Like a Forest,” a song Kurt and Courtney also covered for Lotta Sea Lice. Check out pictures from Tuesday night’s show in the gallery above, and find the setlist and a few video clips below.

The North American portian of Jen Cloher’s tour wraps up soon, after which she has more shows in the UK and Australia, but she’ll be back this summer to play Pickathon.
