Jim Bob of Carter USM preps new solo LP (listen to "Jo's Got Papercuts")

Former Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine frontman Jim Bob is back with his first record in seven years, Pop Up Jim Bob, that will be out August 14 via Cherry Red. “Much of the world seemed to be going to hell in a handcart/basket/bag and people would frequently suggest what was needed was a new Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine like album to document or make sense of it all,” says Jim Bob. “Sting even said it, when he saw my manager at a David Bowie tribute concert wearing a Carter shirt.”

Jim Bob’s razor wit hasn’t dulled a bit, nor have his melodic abilities. You may have already heard his perfect 26 second single “2020 WTF!” and now here’s second single “Jo’s Got Papercuts” which tells the tale of a girl who finds her world upended and doesn’t know what to believe anymore. “She knows she can’t dance to The Smiths now” he sings at one point.

The video for the song plays off the song’s title and uses cutouts from magazine. “I had no idea cut up bits of paper could be so moving” says Jim Bob who calls the video “A combination of necessity and lyrical serendipity.” He adds, “We were going to recreate the scene from the film ‘Frances Ha’ when Greta Gerwig is running and jumping down the street, and then running and jumping down streets was outlawed. Trying to think of an alternative video I could film indoors, it occurred to me that a song about papercuts should be cut from paper.”

The “Jo’s Got Papercuts” video premieres in this post and you can watch below.
