Jo Schornikow

Jo Schornikow releasing new LP & touring (watch the "Ghosts" video)

Jo Schornikow is following her 2012 solo debut First Time, Long Time with her first solo album in seven years and second ever, Secret Weapon, on March 29 via Keeled Scales (pre-order). It’s her first album since having two children with Matthew Houck (aka Phosphorescent, whose live band Jo plays in), and as with last year’s Phosphorescent album, becoming a parent was a major influence on Secret Weapon. “She openly admits that for her, motherhood was not just the immediately satisfying splendor so many describe. Wonder, fear and compromise became omnipresent, in daily life and in the music she shares today,” her bio reads.

We’re premiering the second single from the album (following “Incomplete”), “Ghosts,” a gorgeous bare-bones indie folk song that Jo says “is about people who move from being important presences to little ghosts who live in memories and the past. It’s the stories I make up about how and why this happened. Maybe I’m ghosting around in a few people’s lives too.” It comes with an animated video (made by Michael Hughes) that helps tell that same story, and the video really adds to how powerful the song is. It has a subtle but strong impact, in a mid 2000s indie short film sort of way, and the tender song should appeal to fans of indie music from that same era. Check it out below.

Jo is playing SXSW this year, and she’s doing shows in LA, NYC, Philly and Nashville after that. The NYC shows include a Baby’s All Right on March 28 and a 6 PM in-store at Rough Trade on March 29. Ticket info TBA. All dates are listed below.
