Adult Swim's Joe Pera Talks with You debuted back in May and it's one of the sweetest, funniest, weirdest and wonderful shows of 2018, and could've only been made by Joe Pera. He's got an awkward, understated style that, with standup, can be divisive (he's a little Andy Kaufman but more sincere), but in this series is very charming, though it may take you a couple episodes to settle into Joe's world. (Which isn't much to ask, they're only 12 minutes long.) If you haven't caught it, Joe plays a fictional version of himself where he's a high school teacher in Michigan. Life is slower there and each week, talking to the camera (aka You), Joe tells us about different aspects of his life, be it breakfast, his interest in Michigan's mineralogical makeup, or The Rat Wars of Alberta, Canada.

It's often thoughtful, and often there's a dreamlike quality, the way Nicolas Cage's narration in Raising Arizona had. The best episode of the show by far, and one of the best 12 minutes of TV this year period, is "Joe Pera Reads You The Church Announcements" where he hears The Who's "Baba O'Riley" for the first time and discovers the joy of rock n' roll. It is amazing. There's also a continuing storyline of a budding romance with another teacher, played by Jo Firestone (who is also a writer and producer on the show), and there's also a weirdly aggro neighbor played by Conner O'Malley (Late Night with Seth Meyers). There's no other show like it and you can watch the whole first season (about two hours total) at Adult Swim. You can also check out a few Joe Pera Talks with You clips below.

Joe Pera, Jo Firestone, Conner O'Malley and fellow show writer/producer Dan Licata, all regulars of NYC's alt comedy/UCB scene, are going on a comedy tour in August that they're calling The Blueberry Tour.
