John Doe has an eventful year ahead of him. New solo album The Westerner is out next month and, since our last post, he’s shared a second song off the album, “Go Baby Go” which features backing vocals by Blondie’s Debbie Harry. You can check that out below.

Doe also has a book on the way, Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk, which is out April 26 via De Capo Press. As the title suggests it’s a look at the Los Angeles punk scene of the late-’70s and early ’80s, with “Exene Cervenka of X, Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go’s, Mike Watt of the Minutemen, Henry Rollins of Black Flag, and more share tales of friendships, feuds, dreams, and disappointments, acquainting us with the weirdness and wonder that defined the world they created on the fringes of Hollywood society.”

John will be in NYC to promote the book on May 17 at Rough Trade where he’ll read from book and perform a few songs. It’s a free, all-ages event, no purchase required. John has a few other dates upcoming, and all are listed below.

And lastly, John Doe covers The Sonics‘ classic “Strychnine” for this Sunday’s episode of HBO’s Vinyl. Like most of the covers on this show, it’s pretty straightforward, and you can stream that below. Also on this week’s mini-soundtrack has Jesse Malin covering “My Reflection” by glammy NYC protopunks The Magic Tramps. You can stream those below.
