Public Image Ltd are celebrating their 40th anniversary with “The Public Image is Rotten,” which is a box set, a tour, and a documentary. Here’s the synopsis for the film:

“Anger is an energy!” When you’ve already shaken the British music industry and the culture as a whole to its very core, what do you do for a second act? If you’re John Lydon, formerly Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, you put together an exciting new group and fly straight in the face of expectation. The revealing new documentary The Public Image Is Rotten charts the unpredictable, sometimes frightening trajectory of Public Image, Ltd. through little-seen footage and candid, immensely entertaining interviews with Lydon. As crucial a story of recent popular music as it gets.

You can watch the trailer below, and the documentary is making its way around the world at select screenings now. It hits NYC’s Metrograph Theater from September 13 – 20 and John Lydon will be on hand to introduce the Thursday, 9/13 10:15 PM screening, and on 10/14 he’ll take part in a Q&A following the 7 PM screening, and will introduce the 10 PM screening. Tickets are on sale.

Meanwhile, PiL’s “The Public Image is Rotten” tour hits the NYC area for shows at NJ’s Asbury Lanes on October 13 and Brooklyn Steel on October 15 (tickets).
