Jose James releasing electronic-oriented album, touring (stream 2 songs)
Jose James usually makes organic-sounding vocal jazz and neo-soul (his last album was a tribute to Billie Holiday, to get an idea of what his influences are), but he's changing things up for this year's Love in a Time of Madness. He's adding in trap beats and Drake-y R&B that have him sounding a lot more modern than he usually does. "Movement has been on my mind," he said, when the album was announced. "Not just hearts and minds—I want people to hit the dance floor. I could make jazz albums the rest of my life, but I want to reach people, man. I like Jamie xx as much as I like Miles Davis, you know?"
He recently released the single "Always There" and we're premiering another track from the record, "Closer." Here's what Jose tells us about that one:
"Closer" is the track that started the whole project off. I was in New York and heard Tario's demo and the next thing I knew I was on a flight to LA.. I had to meet this dude! I haven't been this excited about a new producer since I worked with Flying Lotus back in 2010. Dude is a genius.. I wanted the vibe to be to be sexy, female-friendly and laid back.
The album drops on February 24 via Blue Note (pre-order). Listen to "Closer" and watch the video for "Always There" below.
Jose is also touring once the album is out, and playing NYC on March 23 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
