Josh Ritter was as gracious and as joyous as ever on stage at Brooklyn Steel on Sunday (10/29) for an essentially hometown show supporting his ninth studio album Gathering. Road-tested earlier this year during Ritter's solo 'Works in Progress' tour Gathering is a different sound for Ritter, one he described to NPR as a, "new electric dissatisfaction, a new way to rejoice as the storm rolls in."

After a strong opening set from folk rockers Good Old War, Ritter and the Royal City Band took the stage as the layered chorus of "Shaker Love Song (Leah)" wrapped up. With the deluge outside, I was surprised that Ritter didn't immediately salute the weather gods with "Showboat," Gathering's lead single, which has as its opening line "Every time it rains it pours / I pray it rains just a little more on me." Instead he began with the another new song, the almost as apt "Feels Like Lightning," and then went into "Showboat." Ritter joked that he liked the lights to be a bit darker, just like a first date, when playing the new material perhaps because it would hide any imperfections. Really, though, the night felt more like old friends. Photos from the show are in the gallery above and the setlist is below.

Ritter's US tour continues into November, includes some Europe dates in December, and picks up again in January with dates in the Western US plus a headlining show at Nashville's famous Ryman Auditorium in February. All tour dates are listed below.
