Joyce Manor releasing compilation of early rarities (stream a track)

Joyce Manor have announced a compilation of remastered rare early material, Songs From Northern Torrance, due digitally this Friday (5/29) via Epitaph and on vinyl on September 18. It includes songs from their first demo that they recorded as a folk punk-ish two-piece in 2009 (“House Warning Party,” “Fuck Koalacaust”), early acoustic versions of “DFHP?” (which appeared in electric form on the band’s 2010 split with Summer Vacation) and “Who Gave You A Baby” (which appeared in electric form on the Hard Times charity compilation), “Danke Schoen” (a cover?), and the entire Constant Headache EP. The first song to be officially released from the comp is “House Warning Party,” which comes with a lyric video featuring early live footage of the band. Watch that and check out the artwork and tracklist below.

Frontman Barry Johnon says:

A lot of early Joyce Manor songs are actually leftovers from earlier bands, but ‘House Warning Party‘ was the first song I wrote specifically for Joyce Manor. I was working at the Long Beach Aquarium and the first line of the song came to me while I was perusing the vending machine on my break. They had some LifeSavers and on the packaging it said ‘five flavors’ and the opening line of the song just popped in my head. The rest of the lyrics came effortlessly and the song was fully written in about the time it takes to listen to. Listening to it ten years later it sounds young and inspired and I’m impressed at how much of a story I was able to tell in just over a minute.

The Constant Headache songs were previously on the digital compilation Collection, which also included the band’s splits with Summer Vacation and Big Kids, and that comp has since been taken off streaming services but Joyce Manor say the songs from the Summer Vacation and Big Kids splits will return to streaming services as singles.
