Juan Wauters preps new LP, touring in January (watch the "A Volar" video)

Formerly one half of Jackson Heights’ finest garage-folk duo The Beets, Juan Wauters is back with a new album, La Onda de Juan Pablo, that’s out January 25 via Captured Tracks. Juan spent a lot of time travelling all over Latin America, and the new album was recorded on the road with local musicians. We’ve got the premiere of “A Volar,” a song about “dreaming wildly,” which he wrote in Mexico City. The video, directed by longtime collaborator Matthew Volz, was shot there as well and features a family Juan befriended while living there. Juan told us about the song and the video:

Last year when I lived in Mexico City I stayed in Colonia Santa María la Ribera. I rented a room at Teatro Lucido, a neighborhood theater. There I set my to write songs. One of the many was “A Volar.”

In Santa María la Ribera, I found a neighborhood that took me in as family. I became very attached to many people there. The people who I hung out with the most were a family that lived next door. Their names are Beti, Celeste and Cristian. They are mother, daughter and son. They and I would spend a lot of time together and nurtured a beautiful relationship.

In August, Matthew Volz and I went to Mexico City to film the video for “A Volar.” At the beginning, we took a couple of days to just hang out. Then, Matthew decided that we should film my day to day life there while singing the song. Since Beti, Celeste and Cristian wanted to participate, we filmed a video of us four hanging out. We did as we would do regularly. We spent time at Teatro Lucido, went to the market, the square, the mall, saw wrestling, played soccer and ate out. Sometimes we would stop and sing the song together. That’s how this video came about.

“A Volar” is a very sweet, a nice little slice of life — watch that below.

Juan will be on tour in the new year, kicking things off in Philadelphia on January 17, and then playing Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory on January 18 (tickets on sale soon). From there the tour hits the Boston area, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, L.A., San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. All dates are listed below.
