Folky Australian singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin caught our ear earlier this year, ahead of SXSW, where she played a BrooklynVegan show. She then signed to Polyvinyl and announced the signing right after playing The Great Escape (where she also played a BV showcase). Her debut album, Don't Let the Kids Win, will be out on October 7. If you haven't already, check out the very promising singles "Leadlight" and "Pool Party."

Julia was just in NYC over the weekend playing Berlin on Friday (8/26) opening for Hollis Brown. She played solo to a small crowd, and mentioned on stage that she had played an open mic night at Pete's Candy Store two years ago but that this was her first "real" NYC show. Her next real NYC show will be September 25 at Bowery Ballroom opening for Marlon Williams (tickets).

In addition to her solo career, Julia also fronts the band Phantastic Ferniture, which seems just about as promising. It's a bit more "rock" than Julia's own material, but her voice is a force in a similar way. The band has two videos out at the moment, for "Fuckin' 'n' Rollin'" and "Gap Year." Check them out:
