Justin Timberlake played the Super Bowl LII Halftime Show, Prince tribute included (watch)

Two days after releasing his divisive new album Man of the Woods and fourteen years after the infamous “wardrobe malfunction,” Justin Timberlake returned to the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which is at Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium this year.

JT was introduced by his friend and collaborator Jimmy Fallon, and he immediately began his performance with “Filthy” off the new album. He started his performance inside the stadium, and then finally came out onto the field after “Filthy” and went into “Rock Your Body.” He kept walking across the field for “Señorita,” and then finally made it to the stage — where he joined his backing band The Tennessee Kids — for “SexyBack.” Up next was “My Love,” with his band and all his dancers bouncing around the stage, and then Justin toned it down for “Cry Me A River.”

After that, Justin and his dancers made their way back onto the field to dance on the NFL logo, and then Justin was joined by a marching band for “Suit & Tie.” He then toned things down once again and sat alone at the piano for “Until the End of Time.” And that’s when the Prince tribute happened. Prince was projected on a giant screen behind Justin (maybe it wasn’t technically a hologram, which Prince’s brother would not have approved of, and which Sheila E said Justin confirmed he would not use). Justin and the projection of Prince sang “I Would Die 4 U,” and during the song, the cameras switched to outside the stadium where the city of Minneapolis was lit up in purple in the shape of the Prince symbol to honor their hometown hero (and best Halftime Show performer of all time).

After the Prince tribute, Justin re-joined his band on stage for “Mirrors,” accompanied by at least a hundred actual mirrors held on the field by his dancers. Then JT wrapped up the performance by returning to the field to lead a dance party to “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”
