Kirin J Callinan "bares all" in new video feature, touring North America

“Repulsive, arrogant and obtuse” is how Kirin J Callinan describes his music in a new documentary short made by Vice. He goes on to call it “big and ugly, grotesque, vulgar, humiliating for all concerned none more so than myself. Deprecating and defacing. It’s obnoxious. It’s rude. It’s pointless.” When asked to further elaborate, he says, “It’s pop.” This all while he and the guy who is interviewing him are both totally nude. (A state he seems to prefer, judging by his Instagram account.) Few indie acts blur the line between what is real and what is put on like Callinan, who seems to take an Andy Kaufman approach to everything he does, be it live shows, interviews, and albums like this year’s very entertaining Bravado. You can watch the tongue-in-cheek feature, and stream Bravado, below.

Kirin postponed his July North American tour dates but will be here later this summer, including a NYC show at Mercury Lounge on August 29. He also plays Chicago’s Beat Kitchen on August 27 and Los Angeles’ Bootleg Theater on September 6. Tickets to all three of those shows are on sale now. Those are currently KJC’s only announced dates, stay tuned for more.
