Korn frontman Jonathan Davis has signed to Sumerian Records (home of Between the Buried and Me, Animals As Leaders, and more) as a solo artist, and he'll release his debut album on the label this summer. Most details on the album are TBA, but Davis did release lead single "What It Is," which is much softer than what Korn usually does. It sorta hearkens back to early '90s alt-rock/alt-metal ballads, and Davis' singing voice is built for this kind of thing. Listen/watch the video below. Here's what Sumerian Records founder Ash Avildsen said about signing Jonathan Davis:

I remember exactly when and where I was the first time I heard Jonathan's vocals and Korn's seven string guitars behind him. he world had never heard anything like it. His voice has been so culturally impactful that those same songs from two decades ago are still played countless times every day. As a true icon and pioneer artist, the influential significance of his music is unparalleled in the modern rock era. If it wasn't for what he created, I would not have ended up where I am today, nor would have many Sumerian bands. It is truly an honor to be releasing the debut Jonathan Davis solo album. The record is absolutely brilliant, showing new depths to his songwriting and vocal performances that the world has yet to experience.

Davis also announced a spring tour, including a NYC show on May 12 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/2) at 10 AM with various presales starting beforehand. All dates are listed below.

UPDATE: Korn's Ray Luzier revealed that he's drumming for Jonathan Davis on the album and tour.
