Kumail Nanjiani is best known currently for his role as Dinesh in Silicon Valley, but that is likely to change soon as his new movie The Big Sick, which he wrote and stars in, will be in theaters June 23. The film -- a big hit at Sundance this year -- also stars Zoe Kazan, Ray Romano and Holly Hunter, Kurt Braunohler and Aidy Bryant, and is based on Kumail's real-life courtship with the woman who is now his wife. It's a surprising story in many ways. Here's the official synopsis:

Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, THE BIG SICK tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.

Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer, The State) directed The Big Sick, which was produced by Judd Apatow. You can watch the trailer below.

The film is showing as part of BAMcinemaFest on June 21 and is part of Rooftop Films 2017 Summer Series as well. Before the film is out, Kumail, Romano, Braunohler and Bryant will be going on The Big Sick Comedy Tour. That hits NYC on June 1 at PlayStation Theater and tickets are on sale now.
