La Luz

It's hard enough to get a 21+ crowd to dance at a rock show, let alone on a Sunday night. But Seattle's La Luz not only had folks dancing, but dancing down a makeshift aisle in the middle of the crowd last night (7/14) at Mercury Lounge on their current tour. "It's called 'The Soul Train,'" singer Shana Cleveland informed the crowd. Cleveland and the rest of the band's sense of humor and playfulness came across not only in the casual stage banter but also their performance. La Luz are fun.

And also good at what they do. Their music is pretty standard '60s surf pop (think Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man") but they are very good at it, with killer four-part harmonies, tight musicianship and good songwriting. And, again, they are clearly having a blast onstage. It was a short set -- the band only have two singles out to date -- but better to leave you wanting more than overstaying their welcome.

If you do want more, or if you missed them last night, La Luz have added a second NYC show, playing Tuesday (7/16) at Shea Stadium with The Numerators and Chalk & Numbers opening. $7 at the door. Updated tour dates are listed below.

La Luz said their debut album will be out in October on a "Seattle label" (hmm...Hardly Art?). Meanwhile, the band's new single, "Brainwash," is out this week on Suicide Squeeze and you can stream both sides of that -- and watch a video for their first single, "Call Me in the Day" -- below.
