Laura Gibson made a video for "Not Harmless," touring

Laura Gibson is following 2012’s La Grande with her new album Empire Builder this Friday (4/1) via Barsuk (pre-order). The album is named after the Amtrak route Laura took in 2014 when she moved from Portland, OR to NYC, where she sadly was living in the East Village building that collapsed after a gas explosion last year. After losing her home, “she spent the next few months rebuilding her life, bouncing between friends’ couches and guest rooms, finishing her second semester, and all the while rewriting the lyrics she had lost,” as a press release points out.

The album was recorded with contributions from violinist Peter Broderick, Decemberists member Nate Query, fellow singer/songwirter Alela Diane, and more. The album’s now streaming on Apple Music (and you get an instant download of three songs when you pre-order it), and it’s clear that her songwriting is as sharp as ever, if not even a little better. We’re premiering the new Derrick Belcham-directed video for “Not Harmless” off the new album. You can check that out, with a stream of “The Cause” and the lyric video for the title track, below.

Laura is also touring, including a leg of Barsuk labelmate David Bazan’s tour. She isn’t on his East Coast dates, but she’s doing a headlining run here as we speak. That tour rolls into NYC on April 9 at Joe’s Pub with The Brother Brothers. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
