Laura Jane Grace played NYC (pics), releases ‘Wayne’s World’-themed “I Hate Chicago” video
Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace and her backing band The Devouring Mothers (including current Against Me! drummer Atom Willard) have been touring behind Laura's great 2018 solo debut Bought To Rot, and they played their first NYC show since the album's release at Bowery Ballroom last night (4/18). They performed every song on the album, and now that the album has settled in, it's clear that it's sticking as much as Against Me!'s material -- a handful of fans up front were singing almost every word. They also played not one but two covers of The Mountain Goats (who Laura covers frequently lately), The Replacements' "Androgynous," and a Camper Van Beethoven cover, and Laura did a moving solo performance of Against Me!'s "True Trans Soul Rebel."
Opening the show was Philly punk trio Control Top, who are fresh off releasing their very solid debut album Covert Contracts. They played a lot of the songs off that LP, and they put on a killer set that came to an explosive conclusion when there guitarist smashed his guitar, like really smashed it and snapped the headstock in half.
In between was Gaslight Anthem/Scandals offshoot Mercy Union, who played a good portion of their 2018 debut album The Quarry, as well as some brand new songs. Pictures of all three bands are in the gallery above. Video of "True Trans Soul Rebel" below.
Laura also just released a Wayne's World-themed video for "I Hate Chicago" and you can watch that below too.
