Laura Jane Grace shares “Apocalypse Now (& Later),” details debut solo album
Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace is releasing the first Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers album (Laura plus Atom Willard and Marc Jacob Hudson) this fall, and now more details and the first single are here. It's called Brought To Rot and it comes out November 9 via Bloodshot Records (pre-order). It's got 14 songs, including lead single "Apocalypse Now (& Later)," which is on the folkier side, but not in the way of Against Me!'s early "folk punk" material. Laura says the album was inspired by Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever ("Bought to Rot finds her at the same age Petty was when he created his solo debut masterpiece"), and there's definitely a wiser, more refined, more mature vibe to this song, much like Petty's solo debut had. It's great stuff, and you can hear it for yourself below. That's the artwork above, and tracklist and tour dates are below too.
Laura talked to Rolling Stone about the decision to do a solo album before another Against Me! album:
I don’t feel this as much now, but at the time, I felt this pressure where I didn’t know, or don’t know, what Against Me! is supposed to be. Coming out of doing a book and doing Transgender Dysphoria Blues and Shape Shift With Me, I didn’t know if people were expecting for this to be political or expecting me to only sing about trans issues, but, like, that’s not what I’m writing about. I’m just writing because I really love writing songs and I really love playing music and I wasn’t trying to think about things like that. That pressure feels really unhealthy to me. It felt like I needed to break free of, “OK, here’s another Against Me! record.” It was suffocating.
