Listen to Father John Misty's 'Chloë and the Next 20th Century' (and watch him play it live in London)

Father John Misty‘s new album Chloë and the Next 20th Century is out today via Sub Pop. (Get it on colored vinyl.) It’s an ambitious left turn, diving deep into ’40s and ’50s orchestral pop, with nods to Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Glen Miller and classic musicals, with a few detours into Midnight Cowboy soundtrack territory. Josh Tillman is still looking sideways at the modern world, though, with his arch character studies and references to Letterman and Val Kilmer. It’s a very pretty record with some real standouts, like the twangy “Goodbye Mr Blue,” and closer “The Next 20th Century,” that gets surprisingly noisy. Listen to the album below.

You can grab Chloë and the Next 20th Century on Loser Edition clear blue double vinyl, and the deluxe edition that comes on translucent red vinyl with a two bonus 7″s and a book.

Josh celebrated the release of the album in London earlier this week, performing at The Barbican with The Britten Sinfonia conducted by Jules Buckley. He performed the album in full and in track order, but broke it up a little, interspersing older songs like “Funtimes in Babylon,” “Mr Tillman,” “Pure Comedy,” “I Love You Honeybear” and “Date Night.” You can watch the whole pro-shot concert, and check out the full setlist, below.

Father John Misty will play a sold-out, special NYC release show at The Rainbow Room on April 14, and will be back later this year for a tour with Suki Waterhouse that includes another NYC show, 65 floors directly below The Rainbow Room, at Radio City Music Hall on September 22 with the New York Pops.
