listen to Lee Ranaldo’s MUTEMIXTAPE playlist ft. Can, Suicide, Eno/Byrne, more
Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo has shared a playlist as part of Mute Records's #MUTEMIXTAPE series. He opens thing with "The Carrier" from Brian Eno & David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, and it also includes songs from Can, Moondog, Linda Perhacs, Oneohtrix Point Never, Einstürzende Neubauten, Suicide, Young Marble Giants, Radiohead, Drake, Brigitte Fontaine, Suicide, Caetano Veloso, Jack Kerouac, and more. "I’ve found that during this period I’ve been more willing to break out of some long-held listening ruts, and listen to many different things, in some cases stuff I’d been wanting to crawl in deeper with for quite awhile."
Lee also works in a little self-promotion on the mix, including a track from his and Raul Refree's album from this year, Names of North End Women, and Sonic Youth's "Les Anges Aux Piano" from their 2010 Simon Werner a Disparu soundtrack. Listen here:
Speaking of, the Simon Werner a Disparu soundtrack -- which has been on other streaming services for a while -- was just added to Sonic Youth's ever-growing Bandcamp archive:
In Spring 2010 Sonic Youth gathered at their Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, New Jersey to watch the rushes of a new film, ‘Simon Werner a Disparu,’ by French director Fabrice Gobert. The band spent the following few weeks recording music which was then shaped to fit the various scenes of the film. For this release it was decided to do more than present the abbreviated clips of music used in the film. Instead the band went back to the original tapes and re-organized the various pieces; sometimes montaging multiple tracks together, other times extending cues into new sonic realms.
You can stream that below as well.
Speaking of Sonic Youth's archive, they released Live In Bremen 1991 as part of last week's Bandcamp Friday Fundraiser, and it's a full show from the tour with Nirvana that documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke was filmed. Thurston Moore, meanwhile, shared a new song from his upcoming solo album.
