listen to Lord Mantis' new album, 'Death Mask' in full

by Doug Moore

Lord Mantis at Saint Vitus, 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)

We’ve been excited about the new album by Chicagoan blackened sludge crew Lord Mantis for a while — Death Mask is an ugly, mesmerizing tour de force. So naturally, we’re stoked to stream the album in full over at Invisible Oranges.

Here’s a bit from our writeup:

Lord Mantis sounds like that: the really frightening realization that not everyone here is human, not in the way you think of it. Their new album, Death Mask, is a punishing ride that is at times equally soulful and unsettling. It sounds like black metal metal’s skeleton, stripped of the majority of the genre’s sillier trappings. One song after another, the music blasts over the listener like a violent wind in the desert, bathing them in grit and filth.

You can stream Death Mask below. Lord Mantis also have a few live dates announced — here in NYC on July 1 at Saint Vitus as part of Martyrdoom (tickets), as well as at Southern Darkness Fest in Tampa, FL on August 23. They’re also playing a record release show in Chicago tonight (4/25) at Cobra Lounge. Tickets are available if you’re out that way.
