new mix of Replacements' "Talent Show" is how it always should've sounded (listen)

The Replacements‘ upcoming Dead Man’s Pop box set takes a new look at their 1989 album Don’t Tell A Soul. The original release was decidedly slick and ’80s-radio-friendly, and here producer Matt Wallace offers up a new mix on the “Redux” version of the album — which makes up the first disc of the box set — that strips away much of the ’80s sheen and restores “original drums tracks, vocal takes and tempos that were altered in post-production.” The difference is immediately noticeable on the Matt Wallace mix of opening song “Talent Show,” which now feels much more alive, rougher around the edges and, well, more like a Replacements song. You can listen to that, and the original version, below.

The Dead Man’s Pop box set is out September 27 via Rhino.
