Majical Cloudz @ National Sawdust 10/22/2015

Montreal's Majical Cloudz played a release show for their new album, Are You Alone?, at new Williamsburg venue National Sawdust on Wednesday night (10/21) which was decorated with a massive pile of flowers around the main monitor. For their more pop oriented shows like this, National Sawdust is a standing-room-only venue where bands play on the floor too. Frontman Devon Welsh suggested the audience sit down so people could see -- only if they wanted to -- but people did. Majical Cloudz have a certain amount of inherent awkwardness in them with Welsh's delivery, which involves unconsciously/gracelessly swinging his free arm not holding the mic and making slightly uncomfortable intense eye contact with people in the front. Sitting, where everyone's a little more crowded than if they were standing, especially in an intimate space like National Sawdust, it almost felt like it was a deliberate extension on those feelings. Setlist came mainly from the new album. During "Silver Car Crash," Welsh sang the whole song while rolling back and forth on the floor.

Opening the show was another Montreal duo, She-Devils, whose sample based music draws heavily from '50s and '60s rock n' roll, twangy surf, and easy listening/exotica, as filtered though an old AM radio. (There's a little Broadcast/Portishead in what they do, too.) Like at Pop Montreal, part of their set was under red light, which fits what they do. The band have yet to release any recordings yet, but keep an eye out. Pictures from their set, and more from Majical Cloudz, below...
