Matana Roberts put out a new album, playing WNYC’s “Soundcheck” and an NYC release show (dates, streams)
Saxophonist, composer and active Tumblr-er Matana Roberts graced the cover of this month's Wire magazine to discuss her new album, Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile, which combines a smattering of styles including blues, avant-jazz and spoken word. It's the second entry in a proposed 12-part series inspired by Roberts' distant relative, freed slave/plantation owner Marie Therese Coincoin (the first came out in 2011 and made a number of year-end lists). This collection is currently out on Constellation Records (and you can stream it on Spotify). Check out two songs from it below.
You'll be able to hear Roberts live in WNYC's Soundcheck studio at 2 PM EDT today (10/3). You can see her in person when Roberts and her band play the Jazz Gallery on Saturday, October 5 (9 and 10:30pm sets). Tickets are on sale.
UPDATE: If you missed her live on "Soundcheck," you can listen to the archived performance.
