Matt Berninger joined Bob Weir in LA (but Aaron Dessner had to drop off the tour)

Over the weekend, the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir began his tour in support of his new album Blue Mountain, which he made with Josh Ritter, members of The National, and more. The tour was going to have Bobby backed by The National members Aaron Dessner, Bryan Devendorf, and Scott Devendorf, plus National collaborator Josh Kaufman, but Aaron Dessner had to drop off due to a family emergency. In Aaron’s place is two other contributors to Blue Mountain: Steve Kimock, who’s been in a number of Dead-related bands including Bob Weir’s Kingfish and RatDog, and Jon Shaw, who’s played with Joe Russo, Shakey Graves, and more.

So far the tour has hit San Rafael on Friday (10/7), Oakland on Saturday (10/8) and LA last night (10/10). Each show has included material from Bobby’s new album and Dead favorites, and as you’d expect from a Dead-related tour, the setlists have been changed up every night. Last night’s show had two guests: Bob Weir’s Dead & Company collaborator John Mayer, and more excitingly, The National frontman Matt Berninger. Matt sang “Morning Dew” and “Peggy-O,” both of which he sang on the recent Grateful Dead tribute album, plus “I Know You Rider” and “Ripple.” Check out videos:

The tour hits the NYC-area for Brooklyn shows at Kings Theatre on Friday (10/14) and Saturday (10/16), followed by one at Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre on Sunday (10/16). Will any guests show up at these? Tickets for Kings are still available. The Cap is sold out.
