May the Fourth Be With You: Ron Howard Narrates ‘Star Wars’ ++ Jedi-friendly NYC events
It's May the Fourth which has become a holiday for Star Wars fans around the world and there is a bunch of stuff going on, both in the pop culture zeitgeist and at events here in NYC.
In what is an amazing bit of synergy, Ron Howard released a video where he basically turns Star Wars into Arrested Development via his signature dry, snarky narration. It's pretty great, and has actual Arrested Development parallels -- when Luke Skywalker says, upon seeing the hologram of Princess Leia, "Who is she, she's beautiful," Ron chimes in, "She's his sister." (A la George Michael and Maeby.) Ron, you may also recall, was brought in to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story after original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired midway through production. May the 4th is also known in Arrested Development-land as "Cinco de Cuatro," a manufactured holiday that plays into the fourth season of the show which was just released in "remixed" form today on Netflix. Ron Howard was also on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night, primarily to talk about Solo and revealed he got some advice from George Lucas who directed Ron in American Graffiti and has not been involved in any of the new Star Wars films:
We were doing a scene and he was trying to stay out of the way, but he did lean over and he said, ‘You know what Han would really do there?'” Howard recalled on The Late Show Thursday night. “I said, ‘What?’ And he told me the joke, he gave me a little joke. And I said [to the crew], ‘Hey, guess what? Here’s what we’re gonna do in the next take.’ So I know when I hear a good idea.
Ron also talks about what its like to come into a production that was already majorly underway, and Colbert shows a new Happy Days-ized Solo trailer. You can watch that here:
