Mexrrissey

Mexican Morrissey tribute act Mexrrissey touring, playing SummerStage & Rough Trade this week (both free)

Mexrrissey

Mexico’s love of Morrissey is pretty storied at this point — if you’re unfamiliar with the connections, there’s a documentary about it you can watch below. So it’s unsurprising that a tribute act like Mexrrissey exists, sounding exactly like what you might expect — Morrissey songs in traditional horn-and-accordion folk and other styles. Mexrrissey is actually a bit of a Mexican music supergroup, led by Camilo Lara of Mexican Institute of Sound and featuring Sergio Mendoza, of Calexico and Orkesta Mendoza. The band released their debut album, No Manchester, which is a mix of studio recordings and live tracks and it’s all really well done (clearly not a joke to them, despite the novelty aspect to the whole thing). You can stream the whole LP and check videos for “Cada Dia Es Domingo (Everyday Is Like Sunday)” “First of the Gang to Die,” and “Estuvo Bien (Suedehead),” below.

Mexxrissey are currently on tour in the U.S. with two NYC shows this week, both of which are free. They play tonight (7/5) at Rough Trade (doors at 6:30 PM, show at 7), then they’ll headline Central Park SummerStage on Wednesday, July 5, part of the Latin American Music Conference, with Los Cafres and La Dame Blanche. That show is also free (doors at 5 PM, show at 6).
