'80s martial arts rock-n-roll cult film 'Miami Connection' getting revival run (BV Presents NYC screenings; win tix!)

Miami Connection

The story of Miami Connection is almost as insane as the film. After a blind purchase of the film for $50 on eBay, Alamo Drafthouse discovered a crowdpleaser of an exploitation film that dealt in ninjas, bikini-clad honeys, cocaine trafficking, and rock n roll that looks and sounds like something from Boogie Nights:

The year is 1987. Motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s narcotics trade, viciously annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. Multi-national martial arts rock band Dragon Sound have had enough, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice… It’ll take every ounce of their blood and courage, but Dragon Sound can’t stop until they’ve completely destroyed the dealers, the drunk bikers, the kill-crazy ninjas, the middle-aged thugs, the “stupid cocaine”…and the entire MIAMI CONNECTION!!!

Miami Connection had a limited Orlando-only run in 1987, followed by banshiment to VHS shortly thereafter, followed by the eventual fade into utter obscurity. Now Drafthouse Films have resurrected the rock n’ roll cocaine ninja fable, readying the film for release in theaters next month AND to DVD/Blu-Ray in December, both via Drafthouse. For b-movie buffs who thought The Apple was the last ’80s cinematic obscurity stuck in the Forbidden Zone, you need to see this. The trailer for this uberwork is below.

BrooklynVegan is proud to present the NYC showings at Landmark Sunshine Theater on November 2 and 3 (midnight of course), both of which will feature post-show Q&As with “9th degree black belt philosopher/author/inspirational speaker” and the film’s star/director/producer Grandmaster Y.K. Kim (that’s one helluva multi-tasking bro). Advance tickets (not a free BV screening this time) for both the November 2 and November 3 midnight screenings are available now.

You can also go for free as we’re giving away tickets to both screenings, and winners will also get copies a rad promotional 7″ featuring hit single “Against the Ninja” b/w “Friends” by the world’s greatest anti-narcotic Taekwondo band Dragon Sound. See below for details on how to enter.

If you really want a copy of that 7″, you can buy a copy from Drafthouse. It’s also streamable below, and you can get lo-fi versions for the price of an email. Devotees to Dragon Sound can also pick up a sleeveless tee, a replica of the shirts worn by the band in the film.

Contest details, a list of screening dates/locations, song streams and Miami Connection’s mindblowing trailer (watch till the very end) are below…
