Michael Jackson mural up in NYC; MJ block party happening in Brooklyn

Janet Jackson was just in NYC for a great headlining set at Panorama, which included tributes to both her late father Joe Jackson and her late brother Michael Jackson, and there are more MJ tributes happening in NYC. There’s a mural of Michael up at the corner of East 11th St and 1st Ave, which is half of Michael’s face as a child and half of his face as an adult, as Bedford and Bowery points out:

The two-faced mural is reportedly the work of Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, who has been heralded for multi-colored works across the globe, which span the gamut from South African leader Nelson Mandela to photographer Vivian Maier. The artist, who grew up in a poor neighborhood on the south side of São Paulo, has displayed more than 500 murals in Brazil and 17 other countries, landing most recently in this corner of the East Village. As of mid-afternoon on Monday, painters were still spraying the final touches on the vibrant homage, but it should be up-and-ready soon enough for the world to behold.

Spike Lee is also throwing the eighth annual “Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson Block Party” on Saturday, August 25 from noon to 7 PM at Do The Right Thing Way – Stuyvesant Ave between Lexington Ave and Quincy Street. That’s a few days before what would have been Michael’s 60th birthday. It’s free and open to the public.
