Michael McDonald preps new LP, touring, playing Carnegie Hall

michael mcdonald

One of the most ubiquitous voices of the ’70s and ’80s, Michael McDonald had hits with The Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist, as well as lending his distinctive pipes (and talents as a keyboardist) to records by Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Toto and others. (His song “I Keep Forgettin’” also is the basis for Warren G’s “Regulate.”) Having survived Yacht Rock jokes, Michael’s had a resurgence lately, having collaborated with Grizzly Bear for their album Vektamist, and Thundercat recruited him, and his old pal Kenny Loggins, to rekindle some of that ’70s magic on “Show You The Way” from this year’s Drunk. McDonald joined Thundercat at Coachella for “Show You the Way” and Doobies classic “What a Fool Believes” and video of that is below.

McDonald recently announced Wide Open, his first album of original material in nearly 17 years. It features appearances by Warren Haynes, Robben Ford, Marcus Miller and Branford Marsalis and will be out September 15 via BMG. He’ll celebrate the new album with a performance on PBS series Soundstage later this year, and he’s also going on tour beginning in June. Dates include a stop at NYC’s Carnegie Hall on October 19 with Marc Cohn. Tickets for the Carnegie show go on sale Friday, May 5 at 11 AM.
