Holodeck

Michael Stein (S U R V I V E, Stranger Things) on new Holodeck comp (listen)

Michael Stein of S U R V I V E and the Stranger Things score is contributing a solo song to Austin label Holodeck Records‘ first official compilation album, Holodeck Vision One, which drops this Friday (3/9). It’s called “No Standards,” and it’s exactly the kind of nostalgic synthwave you’d expect from Michael. Here’s what he tells us about it:

One night in 2012 I very hastily wanted to sync the arpeggiator on the Roland Jupiter-8 to my KR-55 so out came the drill and soldering iron. I did a quick and dirty modification to break out v-triggers and individual audio outs, hooked it up and this song followed. The track is also rather “quick and dirty”, hence the title. You can expect to hear some more of these off-the-cuff songs at some point. This is also the first time I developed a very strange vocal gating technique which you can hear later perfected in the break down of the song ‘Mentiras’ by Boan.

Michael added, “I think this old picture of the drum machine sums up the aesthetic of this song pretty well ;)” and pasted this pic:

The song premieres below. The compilation features 29 other songs, all exclusive to this release, including new music by Michael Stein’s S U R V I V E and Stranger Things partner Kyle Dixon, Drab Majesty, members of This Will Destroy You and Pure X, and more. Pre-order, see the tracklist and more info, and hear a few more songs from the comp, HERE.

S U R V I V E are playing a few fests this year, including Psycho Las Vegas and Primavera Sound. Michael Stein and Kyle Dixon are playing the music of Stranger Things in Chicago on March 30 (tickets).
