Mitski & Big Thief on late night TV

Mitski and Big Thief played late night TV last night (watch)

It was a big night for indie music on national television last night, as makers of two of 2022’s biggest indie albums — Mitski and Big Thief — performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, respectively. Mitski played “Stay Soft” off her new album Laurel Hell, incorporating some of the performance art elements that she’s been bringing to her shows for her current tour and the shows for 2018’s Be The Cowboy, and making for a stunning performance that’s a total must-see.

Big Thief’s Colbert performance was captivating in an entirely different way, with the band playing “Simulation Swarm” from their new double album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You from a cozy living room studio, complete with a dog sprawled across one of the pedal boards. Their undeniable chemistry playing together comes across more and more strongly as the song builds.

Watch videos of both performances below. Pick up Laurel Hell get it on red vinyl, and Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You on black.

Mitski is on tour supporting Laurel Hell now, including a sold out NYC show at Radio City Music Hall on March 24. Big Thief’s North American tour begins in April, and includes NYC shows at Kings Theatre on April 15 and April 16.
