Mo Pop Festival 2018 Sunday pics (The National, St. Vincent, Brockhampton, more)
The 2018 edition of Detroit, MI’s Mo Pop Festival wrapped up in West Riverfront Park on Sunday (7/29) with sets from The National, St. Vincent, Brockhampton, Portugal. The Man, Jeff Rosenstock, Turnover, Daniel Caesar, and more. For St. Vincent, it was her third festival set in three days (she performed at Newport Folk Festival on Friday and NYC’s Panorama on Saturday), – the Detroit Free Press called her set “the best of the weekend”:
“Let’s stop tyranny in its tracks,” she said to introduce the album’s title track. Alongside the pulsing, futuristic pop of “Los Ageless,” “Digital Witness” and “Marrow” came the dark, jagged edges of “Fear the Future,” the bluesy licks of “Savior” and a lovely “Happy Birthday, Johnny” that brought Clark to the front of the stage to close the show in chanteuse mode.
Setting up her performance of “New York,” she tailored a makeshift a cappella version of the song for Detroit, including a reference to the hot-dog institution American Coney Island — drawing friendly jeers from fans apparently loyal to its next-door rival, Lafayette Coney Island.
The Oakland Press named Brockhampton a festival highlight:
Playing just in front of Sunday’s big names, Brockhampton delivered a festival-stealing set on Mo Pop’s River Stage — showing why fans were nearly stampeding from Daniel Caesar’s chill set before in order to get choice standing room in front. The white T-shirted, self-proclaimed “best boy band in the world” set it off from the get-go with “1998 Truman” and kept the crowd’s hands in the air through a set that included the first-ever performance of “1997 Diana” and quieted down only for Bearface’s solo rendition of “Summer” before closing with a dust-raising rendition of “Boogie.”
