Vampire Weekend may have been the headliner, but the Mo Pop Festival belonged to Lizzo on Saturday, as the Detroit-born breakout star charmed a pumped-up opening-day crowd with a vivacious homecoming set.

In a bright fuchsia outfit, Lizzo boogied, shimmied, twirled and occasionally twerked her way through an hour-long show that brought her zesty plus-size positivity, lyrically candid soul-pop and sassy kiss-off songs to a very packed River Stage at West Riverfront Park.
Vampire Weekend closed the big stage with the band’s signature blend of world-hopping influences, twinkling guitars, tempo shifts and sticky melodies. Ezra Koenig and company, playing their first Michigan show in five years, cooked up a set of time-tested hits, lesser-played fare and new music from the album "Father of the Bride." The 2019 edition of Detroit, MI's Mo Pop Festival kicked off on Saturday (7/27) at West Riverfront Park with Vampire Weekend, Lizzo, Snail Mail, King Princess, J.I.D., Wallows, Alec Benjamin, Roy Blair, The Band Camino, Siena Liggins, and more. West Riverfront Park is set to undergo major renovations, and Detroit Free Press reports that festival producer AEG says a new location for the festival on the river is in the works and nearly confirmed.
