Modern Nature

Modern Nature's Jack Cooper tells us about his favorite albums of 2022

It was a quiet but not too quiet 2022 for UK group Modern Nature. Having dropped the wonderful Island of Noise as a vinyl-only box set release in late 2021, the album came out digitally in January of this year and they did a little touring as well. Perhaps a new album is on the way in 2023? Let’s hope so. In the meantime, listen to Island of Noise below.

We thought we’d check in with bandleader Jack Cooper and asked him about what records he liked from this year. His list includes albums from Bill Orcutt, Kali Malone, Spiritualized and more, and in particular he hilights a few including Cate Le Bon’s Pompei. Check out his liste below.

JACK COOPER (MODERN NATURE) – FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2022)
Music For Four Guitars – Bill Orcutt
Antonyms – Alex Ward & Dominic Lash
Sunset Glow – Julie Tippetts
Are You Ready? – Maggie Nichols
Hymnkus Thoreau Drawings Two – John Cage / Apartment House
Living Torch – Kali Malone
Pompeii – Cate Le Bon
Borderland Melodies – Jürg Frey / Apartment House
Everything Was Beautiful – Spiritualized

Jack says: “All of these records have resonated this year but I’d like to highlight ‘Are You Ready?’ by Maggie Nichols, the reissue of ‘Sunset Glow’ by Julie Tippetts and Cate Le Bon’s ‘Pompeii’. Three vastly different records made decades apart, but similar in character and with a shared focus. The Julie Tippetts’ reissue flew under the radar which seems fitting for a record that’s consistently been ignored. An absolute 10/10 classic. Cate’s record is similarly expansive and technicolour… beautiful melodies as well.”
