Coney Island Baby, the new venue in the old HiFi/Brownies space on Avenue A, had its Opening Night party on Thursday (4/26) with headliners and NYHC staples Murphy’s Law who christened the joint in beer.

D Generation and Heart Attack frontman and Coney Island Baby co-owner Jesse Malin and his band — Johnny Pisano included — opened with a short set of classic NY hardcore songs. HR from Bad Brains was the surprise guest. He joined Jesse’s band to play a few reggae songs. You can catch HR as a headliner at Bowery Electric on May 3rd.

Murphy’s Law played a full set, passing around a couple very large bottles of Jägermeister, and beer went flying across the intimate and packed room. Murphy’s Law play a significantly bigger space when they open for the reunited Misfits at Prudential Center in May (along with Harley Flanagan who Jimmy Gestapo mentioned at the show).

Big Takeover founder Jack Rabid DJ’d classic hardcore, punk and reggae/dub, and the crowd included many familiar East Village faces, like Continental owner Trigger, NY1’s Roger Clark, and members of other bands. Pictures from the night are in the gallery above and there are a few Instagram videos below.

Speaking of Bad Brains members, Dr. Know’s other band Defiant Ones have a show Saturday night in Bushwick.

The upcoming Coney Island Baby schedule includes shows with Billie Joe Armstrong’s new band The Longshot, Alejandro Escovedo, Tommy Stinson’s Bash & Pop, Craig Finn & The We All Want the Same Things Band, The Tall Pines and more.
