Stephen O'Malley (1/3 of Nazoranai) at Big Ears Fest (more by Joshua Ford)

Its pure improvisation, I'm going to try and avoid as many clichés as I can here, in talking about improvisation. That's the whole thing though, its not a cliché, the idea is that I don't know what the idea is. The idea is in the present, so everything that happens is happening right then, and will probably never be repeated. Even stylistic tendencies, I've noticed, have been completely different every time we play together...It's an interesting exercise in patience, in trance, in timbre and in alertness as a player.

[Stephen O'Malley on Nazoranai]

As briefly mentioned in our Stephen O'Malley interview post (quoted above), Nazoranai -- a perplexing improvisational trio that features the prolific and influential Japanese experimental musician Keiji Haino, SunnO))) / Khanate guitarist Stephen O'Malley, and Australian multi-instrumentalist / occasional SunnO))) contributor Oren Ambarchi -- will be embarking on a brief North American tour in May, which will include a NYC stop at The Wick on May 21. Tickets for that show are available now.

A few days later, O'Malley and Ambarchi will play a duo show as part of the NYC edition of Tectonics Festival. This reprisal of a May 2013 Tectonics Glasgow performance will go down on 5/23 at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn. No advance tickets, $20 at the door. Full Tectonics schedule here.
