new My Brightest Diamond song, "Wish For The Moon"; Listen (BV Premiere)

My Brightest Diamond has confirmed that she’s been working on a followup to 2014’s very solid This Is My Hand, and yesterday she posted a picture of what she says is “the last of the last sessions.” Hopefully that means it’s coming soon!

In the meantime, she has written and recorded a brand new acoustic song called “Wish For The Moon” for the latest Amazon Acoustics playlist, which will be out on Friday (9/8). Here’s what Shara tells us about the song:

I stopped playing acoustic guitar in 1998 because I felt that there were so many stereotypes with women and acoustic guitars, so I have explored electric guitar ever since. However I have held resentment about this, that in order to avoid the assumptions of others, I’ve prevented myself from showing a side of myself that exists. I decided to take this opportunity with Amazon to fully engage with my own fear of vulnerability, my resistance to the stereotypes and expose a quieter side, so I wrote a love song on acoustic guitar.

It’s very nice to hear her making a song like this — it sounds incredibly natural and certainly isn’t some tossed-off side project type thing. There’s a haunting atmosphere behind Shara’s voice and guitar, sort of in a Vashti Bunyan kind of way, and “Wish For The Moon” has as much power as the songs she writes with an electric guitar. A stream premieres below.

This Friday’s Amazon Acoustics playlist also features Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, Michelle Branch, Deer Tick, Hamilton Leithauser, and more.
