So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

YVES TUMOR – “ROMANTICIST” / “DREAM PALETTE”

the new Yves Tumor album comes out this week and it’s shaping up to be really, really good. Here are two more songs from it.

FRANK OCEAN – “DEAR APRIL” & “CAYENDO”

We’re still waiting on that Frank Ocean album, but meanwhile, 7″ singles with the new songs “Dear April” and “Cayendo” went out to fans and vinyl rips of both songs have now made their way online. Both are hushed, intimate songs with little more than Frank’s voice and a guitar, and they sound great.

TIERRA WHACK – “STUCK”

Tierra Whack interpolates/samples Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” for this new song that’s very directly about being quarantined.

SERPENTWITHFEET – “A COMMA”

serpentwithfeet released the great soil in 2018, and he’s following it with a new EP, Apparition, due out in April. Its first single is the soulful, entrancing “A Comma,” released through Adult Swim’s Singles series.

INVENTIONS – “OUTLOOK FOR THE FUTURE”

Inventions, aka Matthew Robert Cooper (Eluvium) and Mark T. Smith (of Explosions in the Sky), will release their new album Continuous Portrait on May 29 via Temporary Residence Ltd, and the first single is the gorgeous “Outlook for the Future.”

SHARON VAN ETTEN – “SEVENTEEN” (ft. NORAH JONES)

Last year, Sharon Van Etten played an alternate, Norah Jones-featuring version of her excellent 2019 single “Seventeen” on Colbert and at Webster Hall, and the song was also released as an Amazon Music exclusive. Now it’s on all streaming services.

TWEN – “SOOTHSAY” & “THRICE”

Nashville duo TWEN have shared two new songs, their first new music since releasing their debut album, Awestruck, last year. Both “Soothsay” and “Thrice” are sun-dappled folk songs, gentle and indeed soothing.

NO AGE – “FEELER”

Here’s another single from No Age’s forthcoming Goons Be Gone. “Feeler” is pretty poppy as No Age goes, and the video has a nice nostalgic feel. Says director Kersti Jan Werdel, “I wanted to make something that felt honest to the experience of being an adolescent just before entering adulthood. Animals are continually referenced, because I can’t forget the untethered and wild way it was to be a teenager.”

NILS FRAHM – EMPTY

German composer Nils Frahm released Empty on Saturday to “mark this year’s 88th day and as an acknowledgement to these unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in.” He conceived of the album just before breaking his thumb. ““When I came back from the hospital with a broken thumb and listened to the recordings, I felt they were unfinished. I decided to put them aside and started to work on my small album, Screws. Many many other notes of the piano have been struck since these days, and before we all forget about this, I thought it would be a good moment to share these lullabies with you. I hope they help you stay all strong and calm in these days of solitude – despite the hardship, we can discover introspection and reflection unexpectedly. Who knows what it is good for.”

BC CAMPLIGHT – “SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF”

Singer-songwriter BC Camplight releases his new album Shortly After Takeoff at the end of April and he’s just shared the groovy title track. It’s like sci-fi soft rock with strings intermingling with theremin and more.

EVERYTHING IS RECORDED – “11:55AM / THIS WORLD”

XL Records boss Richard Russell releases Friday Forever, his new album as Everything is Recorded, this Friday and you can get an early taste “11:55AM / THIS WORLD” which features Infinite Coles and Maria Somerville. It’s a mournful, somber track that sounds pretty calming during these uncertain times.

BOY AZOOGA – “U.F.O.” (JIM SULLIVAN COVER)

Welsh group Boy Azooga have shared a terrific cover of “U.F.O.”, the title track off musician Jim Sullivan’s 1969 cult classic album. “I was introduced to Jim Sullivan’s U.F.O last year by Tom Friend in Friendly Records,” says Boy Azooga’s Davey Newington. “It has become one of my favourite ever albums since. Hope we did it some justice! Would like to dedicate this version to Pete, safe voyage on your U.F.O.” They’ve made a video for it as well:

JIM JAMES – “THE INNER LIGHT” (BEATLES COVER)

Jim James did a solo banjo and drone cover of the classic Beatles b-side “The Inner Light,” and it not only sounds great, it’s for a great cause. Read more here.

TREY ANASTASIO – “I NEVER LEFT HOME”

We’ve got more from Phish’s Trey Anastasion and his “quarrantine sessions”.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS – “UNTIL OLYMPIUS RETURNS”

The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle has already shared a couple of performances of new songs from coronavirus self-isolation, and here’s the third.

ANGEL OLSEN – “MORE THAN THIS” (ROXY MUSIC COVER)

Here’s another cool quarantine cover.

THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH – “JESUS, ETC” (WILCO COVER)

And another.

PHOEBE BRIDGERS – “MAMAH BORTHWICK (A SKETCH)” (CONOR OBERST COVER)

And this one too.

AMANDA SHIRES & JASON ISBELL – “HIGH & DRY” (RADIOHEAD COVER)

And yet another.

HANK VON HELL – “RADIO SHADOW”

Former Turbonegro vocalist Hank Von Hell released a new song featuring Sum 41 guitarist Dave Baksh and bassist Jason McCaslin, and as you’d probably expect, it’s a hard-partying rock rager.

FIELD MEDIC – “I WILL NOT MOURN WHO I WAS THAT HAS GONE AWAY”

These days, a lot of musicians’ new output counts as “bedroom folk,” but Field Medic has been working in that realm for a while, so what better time than now for another great new song from him.

SAD13 – “DANCE STEPS” (NATURAL HISTORY COVER)

“This one will go out to everyone who loves NYC related rock compilations from 2003,” Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis writes. “In the great tradition of Spoon I have covered a song by the Natural History. I was supposed to play their (reunion?) show tonight in New York, instead I made a version of “Dance Steps.” If you like it, give some $, it will all go to Release Aging People in Prison Campaign. Half my life ago I got the ‘Yes New York’ comp (“New York City Cops” lol), found out about Ted Leo (who was also supposed to play the show tonight!!) & the Natural History & Calla & Le Tigre & a bunch of DFA things…it was a fun teen time travel moment to make this, hope u like.”

FUSE – “THIS SEGREGATION WILL END”

Singapore hardcore newcomers Fuse are releasing their debut 12″ EP on Quality Control HQ this year, and here’s the scorching new track “This Segregation Will End.”

PYRRHON – “ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE”

NYC death metal oddballs Pyrrhon are releasing their new album Abscess Time on June 26 via Willowtip Records, and the first single is the chaotic “Another Day In Paradise.”

THURSTON MOORE – “SUNDAY STAGE”

Thurston Moore shared a new song, performed with members of Chelsea Light Moving, which we wrote more about here.

MICHAEL STIPE – “NO TIME FOR LOVE LIKE NOW” (DEMO)

Michael Stipe worked on this new solo track with The National’s Aaron Dessner, and we wrote more about it here.

THE WEEKND – “NOTHING COMPARES,” “MISSED YOU” & “FINAL LULLABY”

The Weeknd just recently released his new album After Hours, and now here’s the deluxe edition with these three new songs.
