While the first day of Panorama was being cancelled in NYC under the threat of storms, in Newport, RI, the 2018 edition of Newport Folk Festival kicked off on Friday (7/27) in the heat. Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit closed out the day with a set that included a surprise guest appearance from David Crosby, which we posted about HERE.

Crosby wasn't the day's only surprise appearance, either. Earlier in the afternoon, John Prine introduced Margo Price's set, and he came back out to join her on "In Spite of Ourselves," which the two also performed together during last year's big finale. Brandi Carlile also joined Margo for a cover of Dolly Parton's "9 to 5." Watch Margo and John's Friday performance of "In Spite Of Ourselves" below.

Brandi Carlile was also a guest for Lucius's set - she joined them on "Dusty Trails," and for a cover of the late Richard Swift's "Most of What I Know," which also featured Nicole Atkins and Bedouine.

Friday at Newport also featured sets from Sturgill Simpson, St. Vincent (who, like we've seen her do before, eschewed the guitars, choreography and visuals of her usual live show for a piano set with longtime collaborator Doveman) Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, The Autumn Defense (whose set included Wilco material), new supergroup Glorietta (featuring Matthew Logan Vasquez, Noah Gundersen, Kelsey Wilson, David Ramirez, Jason Robert Blum, and Adrian Quesada), Moses Sumney, Tyler Childers, Erika Wennerstrom, Amanda Shires, Courtney Marie Andrews, This Is The Kit and more. Check out pictures in the gallery above.

Newport Folk Festival continues throughout the weekend, and NPR is streaming some sets live.
