Nico biopic hitting theaters; Marissa Nadler, U.S. Girls & more playing tribute show

Nico, 1988 the biopic about the last years of singer and Velvet Underground collaborator Nico, is being released on August 1 in NYC and August 3 in L.A., with more cities to come. The film stars Trine Dyrholm as Nico and Here’s the synopsis:

Leading a solitary existence in Manchester, Nico’s life and career are on the ropes, a far cry from her glamorous days as a Warhol superstar and celebrated vocalist for The Velvet Underground. Nico’s new manager Richard (John Gordon Sinclair) convinces her to hit the road again and tour Europe to promote her latest album. Struggling with her demons and the consequences of a muddled life, she longs to rebuild a relationship with the son Ari (Sandor Funtek) she lost custody of long ago. A brave and uncompromising musician, Nico’s is the story of an artist, a mother, and the woman behind the icon.

Folks in NYC can get an early look at the movie on July 19 at Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg (tickets). You can watch the trailer for Nico, 1988 below.

In celebration of the film, there’s a special show happening at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge on August 2 celebrating the music of Nico and the release of the new film. There will be performances from Marissa Nadler, U.S. Girls, Julie Byrne, Lizzi Bougatsos (Gang Gang Dance / IUD), L’Rain, and Tammy Faye Starlite. Tickets are on sale.
