The Paris Theatre, the last of NYC’s single-theater grand movie palaces, is in danger of dimming the lights for good. Deadline reports that the 586-seat theater, which opened at 58th Street and Fifth Avenue in 1948, is expected to close in August and, “unless something drastic happens,” the last movie to play there would be Ron Howard’s documentary Pavarotti.

The world of streaming has been very tough on old movie houses like The Paris Theatre, which represented the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and often hosted big movie premieres. The Ziegfeld Theatre closed in 2016 and, while not a movie palace, iconic Upper West Side arthouse destination Lincoln Plaza Cinemas closed last year, supposedly with renovations in mind, but remains shuttered.
