Vexx hail from Olympia, WA's thriving underground punk scene, the same scene that brought us bands like the now-defunct (and sadly missed) Hysterics, whose final hometown show Vexx opened. They also shared a label with that band, Portland's radical feminist record company M'Lady's Records. More recently, they hooked up with trusty New York label Katorga Works, who released their new EP, Give And Take, this week.

Give And Take is rooted in classic punk. The power chord riffs could've come from just about any California hardcore band around from '78 to '82, but otherwise Vexx don't actually sound like those bands. Singer Maryjane Dunphe really sings, in a way that's not a requirement for a good punk song but certainly never hurts. She brings a few different styles to these four songs, giving the EP a lot of diversity for how short it is, and a lot of replay value. Stream it below, and download it (name your price) at the Katorga Works bandcamp.

Vexx are making their way to the Northeast to tour here in May, which includes opening the two previously mentioned Pissed Jeans shows at Baby's All Right on May 9 (8 PM and 11:45 PM). You can also see them somewhere a little more intimate, probably a little more sweaty, and all ages, when they play Silent Barn on May 1 with local punks Nancy and Pox. The Silent Barn show is $8 at the door, and tickets for the early and late Baby's shows are on sale now.
